What is PG and VG? Why does ratio matter?

PG and VG are liquids suitable for consumption, which make up the majority of e-liquid or vape juice. PG stands for propylene glycol and VG stands for vegetable glycerin.

E-liquids usually consist of 3 ingredients:

  • PG (propylene glycol)
  • VG (vegetable glycerin)
  • aroma

E-liquids may even contain nicotine, depending on the mixture.

Propylene glycol, i.e. PG:

Propylene glycol or PG is commonly used in the food industry as a preservative. It is also used in the UK medical industry and is found in asthma inhalers. Colorless liquid with a slightly sweet taste. It is mainly used as a "base material" for e-liquids, its viscosity is lower than that of vegetable glycerin.

It is a colorless, odorless liquid.

PG is responsible for the intensity of the taste of e-liquids, so it is usually used in larger quantities when mixing e-liquids.

PG is a completely safe compound, it is not harmful or toxic to inhale. This is confirmed by a long-term experiment in 1947, and research since then has confirmed the safety of PG inhalation.

Propylene glycol itself should not be swallowed, which is why it is only used as a food additive in the food industry. So, if someone has heard news about the dangers of propylene glycol, you can rest easy because most studies look at the dangers of ingesting large amounts of propylene glycol, however, it is completely safe to inhale, and this compound is also found in asthma inhalers.

Vegetable glycerin, i.e. VG:

Vegetable glycerin or VG is also a colorless liquid used in the food industry, mainly as a sweetener and thickener. Like PG, VG is used as a base for these liquids as well as a sweetener. It comes from vegetable oils, so vegetarians can also use it. It is usually used in e-liquid.

It is also found in many medical, food and personal care products.

VG is classified as "generally safe" and is considered one of the most benign substances, which is why it is used in so many areas.   VG is safe for humans to both swallow and inhale. There are people who are allergic to VG, but this is very rare.

VG is responsible for the vapor, how dense and powerful the vapor will be. Thus, if someone likes a lot of vapor when vaping, it is recommended to use more VG when mixing.

The mixing ratio of PG/VG:

With a high PG content (60%+), the flavor will be stronger and the vapor will be less. PG is also responsible for the so-called "throat effect". This is often preferred by people who use/used cigarettes.

When mixed in a half-and-half ratio, both the taste and the vapor will be average.

With a high VG content (60%+), the taste will be average, a little weaker, and the amount of vapor will be high. VG also gives a silky feel, so those who like it are recommended to use a slightly higher VG content.

The mixing ratios are usually:

  • 50% PG, 50% VG→ with this mixing ratio, a harmonious ratio of flavor and vapor is achieved
  • 70% PG, 30% VG→ with this mixing ratio, the flavor will be emphasized, less vapor can be achieved with it
  • 30% PG, 70% VG→ with this mixing ratio, the taste is a bit in the background, but more vapor can be achieved with it

If you are already aware of these, you can mix your favorite flavors in your e-cigarette or vape much more confidently.
